Why you need to ditch the conventional store-bought and make healthy homemade mayonnaise instead.
Most people today aren’t making their own healthy homemade mayonnaise. Condiment aisles at grocery stores are full of different conventional Mayonnaise brands. After all, it’s a pretty popular condiment these days. People love to eat it on burgers, potato salad, dips, egg salad, chicken dishes and even in baking. Mayo is a necessity to North American cuisine, right?
But should it be? Are the ingredients natural ones that our Creator created? Or ones that are synthetic and man-made that are harmful to our health?
Taking a quick look at the ingredients of conventional mayonnaise we can see it has several non-food items; faux-foods if you will. And nearly all of these things should make all of us queasy just thinking about them. Read through some of the most common ingredients below.
Common Ingredients in Mayonnaise
- Canola oil – an inflammatory oil that is genetically modified, incredibly processed and has been linked to kidney & liver issues, strokes, heart damage and more. If you want to learn more about the history of canola, check out this post by Dr. Josh Axe.
- Modified food starch – genetically modified food such as corn, wheat, tapioca or potatoes, which has been physically, enzymatically, or chemically altered
- Natural Flavours – code for “concoction of chemicals” and/or MSG
- Sugar – oh, how so much can be said about added processed sugars! UNNECESSARY to say the least. Causes inflammation, weakens the immune system, stresses the liver, creates an addictive sugar response in the brain, and instead of filling you up, it encourages you to eat more
- Calcium Disodium EDTA – EDTA is a chemical prescription medicine, given to treat lead poisoning. Hmm. It’s made from formaldehyde, sodium cyanide, and Ethylenediamine.
EDTA is known to cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, low blood pressure, skin problems, and fever. And EDTA is unsafe to use more than 3 grams per day or to take longer than 5-7 days. Sounds like something I really want to be eating…or not.
- Potassium Sorbate – a synthetic (read: man-made, not natural) preservative that potentially causes DNA damage as well as allergic reactions
- Soybean Oil – made from genetically modified beans that are highly processed. Why is it highly processed? Because it’s kinda hard to squeeze oil out of seeds. This process usually includes heat, chemicals, bleach, and even deodorizers. Here’s a simple flow chart to check out the process. It’s prone to oxidation and linked to fatty liver disease, obesity, heart disease and more.
- Maltodextrin – This is linked to numerous health concerns, including, but not limited to: weight gain, chronic inflammation, imbalanced gut bacteria, and gastrointestinal symptoms. It’s also known to have a high glycemic index, which spikes blood sugar.
- Citric Acid – this use to be made from citrus; now it’s generally made from Aspergillus niger, which is black mould. Yep for real. Here’s a research article on the topic.
- Eggs, egg yolks – from factory-farmed, not-well-taken-care-of chickens. It’s also been shown the eggs from these types of chickens are actually less nutritious than organic, real free-range eggs. Here’s some nutritional data comparing the two.
All I can say is yuck. And gross. And 🤮.
4 Reasons We Need To Ditch It
Interestingly enough, the story about the first emulsified mayo comes from 1756 when a chef didn’t have any cream to whip with the eggs and substituted olive oil instead. It was named after the city Mahon, the largest city on the Spanish island Menorca, where the chef was located at the time. Back then it was just eggs & oil.
Here are 4 reasons why we should ditch the conventional, store-bought mayo:
- It doesn’t contain food our Heavenly Father created. We’re called to eat a certain way, and it definitely doesn’t involve man-made synthetic faux-foods.
- It does more damage to our bodies than good. Our bodies are meant to be taken care of and respected. We are to treat them like a temple for the Spirit of YHWH, His Holy Spirit. By consuming foods that cause inflammation, damage our DNA, and just overall poisons us, it’s not taking care of the gift of our bodies that our Creator gave us!
- To piggy-back off of the last one, eating processed foods negatively affects our brain health, which means lower cognitive function. If we have brain fog and are unable to think clearly, we can’t really communicate well with our Creator, which is pretty much the most important thing in life: good communication with our heavenly Father.
- It’s healthier and tastes better to make our own!
Is There Really a Better Option?
You better believe there is! Homemade mayo!
Making homemade mayonnaise is simple, uses minimal ingredients, and can actually be healthy for you instead of damaging you. When using the right ingredients, one can use healthy homemade mayonnaise to enhance not only their meal but also their diet.
So what’s in a healthy mayo you ask? Simple, fresh, the least-processed-as-possible ingredients. Ingredients our Creator made, not man.
Homemade Mayonnaise Ingredients
- Organic, real farm-fresh, humanely-raised free-range eggs – Not only are the chickens treated like they should be, they’ve also been shown to be more highly nutrient-dense than factory-farmed eggs. They contain vitamin A, D, E, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids. The yolks also contain choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which are excellent for eye health.
- Organic cold-press extra-virgin olive oil – what is not to love about EVOO?! It is a very important Bible food after all. EVOO provides high levels of vitamins E and K, improves skin health, reduces diabetes symptoms, and strengthens the immune system. It’s good for heart health and even has anti-cancer properties. EVOO is also a source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
- High-quality avocado oil – it doesn’t contain cholesterol or trans-fat but does contain vitamin A, E, thiamin, and riboflavin.
- Organic, unfiltered, raw apple cider vinegar, OR organic, fresh lemon juice – the list of health benefits of raw, fresh lemon juice is quite long, as is raw ACV. A few top ones include reduced cancer risk, aids weight loss, and supports heart & digestive health.
- Fresh organic garlic – ya’ know how everyone keeps talking about superfoods these days? Well, garlic is one of them. It contains vitamin C, selenium, manganese, B6, fiber, and even calcium. Garlic is known to aid against heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and of course, boosts our immune system.
- Organic turmeric – Another incredible superfood. Really, there’s so much to this amazing golden root that it deserves its own post. It reduces inflammation, improves skin health, reduces depression symptoms, contains anti-cancer properties, and even improves brain function. Because of all it’s benefits, this golden root should be used regularly, if not daily!
- Organic Dijon mustard – not only does this enhance the flavour, but it also contains selenium, potassium, manganese, calcium, and thiamin
Healthy Homemade Mayonnaise is so much better!
This won’t last as long in the fridge compared to store-bought mayo. But that’s because it isn’t full of fillers, binders, and stabilizers. However, making your own homemade mayonnaise tastes better and is more highly nutritious. Instead of adding inflammation, it can help to fight it.
Our family loves to eat it on sandwiches (on homemade grain-free bread of course 😉), with roasted potatoes & veggies, mixed into avocados, mashed up with sardines on salad greens, and even pasta dishes. Not only is this recipe tasty, it’s also incredibly easy to make.
